Asbestos Testing and Removal

Welcome to Asbestos Nelson Ltd asbestos testing and removal services in the Nelson region. This page provides a summary of what we can do for you if you suspect you have Asbestos on your property.

Asbestos Testing

In order to confirm whether you have asbestos on site, initially you will need samples taken for laboratory analysis. We have licensed professionals who can take samples for you and organise the Laboratory tests. The samples are taken under controlled conditions to ensure continued safety of occupants of the property.

An independent IANZ accredited laboratory, certified in testing for Asbestos, receives the samples and undertakes the tests, then provides Asbestos Nelson with an analysis report, showing whether the sample contains Asbestos or not and if so, what type of Asbestos.

If the laboratory results confirm that no Asbestos is present, then our licensed professional will advise you of this, allowing safe reoccupation of site.

If the laboratory returns a positive Asbestos result, we can then conduct a suitable survey to determine the nature, and quantity of the asbestos and the likelihood of human exposure. It is important to note that not all Asbestos needs to be removed. Provided the Asbestos is undamaged and in good condition it normally poses little to no risk. Our licensed professionals will advise on this. If the Asbestos is deemed to be in an unsafe condition, we then formulate a plan for safe removal and decontamination of the site.

Testing and reporting of asbestos on site will take approximately 3 days.

The Asbestos Removal Process

Once the decision has been made that the Asbestos needs to be removed, Asbestos Nelson is required to register an application with Worksafe New Zealand and create a register of documentation needed for the removal and decontamination process. This is necessary to ensure all safety procedures are adhered to in the complete process.

After removal is complete, a licensed Independent Asbestos Assessor will take samples of the site to be tested by an independent IANZ accredited laboratory to ensure that the specific asbestos risk zone has been returned back to an acceptable and safe level. If the Asbestos is removed under Class-A, enclosed, conditions, a licensed Independent Asbestos Assessor will conduct air quality testing to ensure that no respirable Asbestos fibres remain inside the removal area.

A Clearance Certificate of reoccupation is issued by the Independent Asbestos Assessor once the site is confirmed to be within the safe threshold, allowing full use of the site again.

Asbestos Surveys Available

Demolition surveys

Asbestos demolition surveys may be required when some or all of a residential, commercial, or industrial property is set to be demolished. They can be quite intrusive as the surveyor will access all areas of the building to be demolished.

Refurbishment surveys

Asbestos refurbishment surveys may be required when part or all of a building is set to be refurbished. Again, this could be a residential or commercial property of any kind. This kind of survey can be quite intrusive, as the surveyor will need to truly access all parts of the area to test for asbestos.

Management surveys

Asbestos management surveys may be required when there is asbestos in a building (whether that’s residential, commercial, or industrial), and there are people living, working, or using that building. The aim of this survey is to ensure the asbestos or ACM there is being safely managed, so that it is not putting residents, workers, or site visitors at any risk of exposure.
